TWD season 3 part 2 Episode 309 ‘Merle” (Michael Rooker)

This is a really interesting shot of Merle, who rarely looks afraid–but he does here. Why? SPOILER Because that is none other than Maggie, the paramour of Glenn who Merle nearly beat to death then set a walker upon while Glenn was bound to a chair. She’s got to want to kill him and  she has the means to do so. Unfortunately, as you can glimpse here on the far right, Merle’s brother Daryl is on the scene as well, which will make this encounter awkward to say the least. The next photo shows this encounter from another angle and it tells us even more:

TWD season 3 part 2 Episode 309 ‘Merle” (Michael Rooker), Daryl (Norman Reedus), Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Rick ( Andrew Lincoln).

From this angle we can see that Maggie’s got some kind of handgun–which means unless she’s out of ammo, she could take ol’ Merle’s head off sort of like the walker whose head Merle just bashed in.

Finally, based on the background in this shot, they have not traveled far since the prior two photos. The look on Maggie’s face says huh? or WTF?!?

It seems Rick is still leading them at this point. Since Merle is out of the frame but Rick has got his sights (but not his rifle) fixed on something/someone, I’m guessing he has chosen not to kill Merle on the spot but rather bring him back to the prison. Why would he do that? It could be argued that Merle was acting under the Governor’s orders and had no choice but to do as he did (certainly Merle would argue that). Merle possibly could be tamed enough to be a group member and there’s no doubt he’d be an asset as a fighter. Perhaps Rick is considering whether Daryl could reign his brother in. It seemed Rick was willing to give Merle a second chance in season one–might he still harbor feelings of forgiveness, if only for Daryl’s sake?  Tough choices to make, for sure.

Tune on Sunday, February 10 on AMC at 9/8c to learn just what the heck is going down here!
