New Trailer for Ender’s Game Appears To Spoil Major Plot Point
ENDER’S GAME — Trailer (VIDEO)
Based on the best-selling, award winning 1985 novel by Orson Scott Card, Ender’s Game is a science fiction epic adventure which stars Asa Butterfield, Hailee Steinfeld, Ben Kingsley, Viola Davis, Abigail Breslin and Harrison Ford.
Set in a not-too-distant future in which an alien race known as the Formics have attacked Earth, the movie stars Butterfield as Andrew “Ender” Wiggin, an exceptionally bright boy who’s recruited to help humanity face future threats.
Colonel Hyrum Graff (Harrison Ford) guides Ender as he advances from Battle School to Command School and soon finds himself under the tutelage of the legendary Mazer Rackham (Oscar winner, Sir Ben Kingsley).
“They know our strategies. They’ve learned our weaknesses, and the alien attack nearly destroyed us,” Ford’s Graff explains in the trailer voiceover. “That must never be allowed to happen again.”
The clip features war footage between the human race and the aliens, known in the book as “buggers,” with fighter jets fending off the invading horde amidst outer space explosions. Also featured in the trailer is an tender moment between Ender and his beloved sister, Valentine (Abigail Breslin).
Online buzz has been generated by one of the final images in the trailer for Ender’s Game, which appears to spoil for readers of the Ender novels what could be considered to be a major climatic moment.
My main concern is that since much of Ender’s story took place in his interior world–his mind– rather than using voice-over, I’ve read that the maker’s of this film are using Ender’s friend ‘Bean’ for the audience to hear what Ender is thinking. Ender’s character growth was as important as his war-gaming skills and I’m not sure if going that route would translate the deep feelings of psychological and physical isolation that Ender experienced.
The film also stars Hailee Steinfeld as another battle school recruit, Petra, and Viola Davis as Major Gwen Anderson.
“Ender’s Game” opens Nov. 1.
